Slide Away
a poem

This eye, always on the prize

Now it leaves me, now it slides away

All those words I used to say

Now my vocabulary slowly slides away

My head always held high

I weep now when I try

I can’t glimpse the stars now

I can’t steal the sky

It is so hard now to raise these arms

Lift myself away from harm

I can’t hold you, reassure you with words I say

I couldn’t stop you if you tried to run away

This love of ours, all that I pray

Will be the very last thing to slide away.
