A Child's Life
a poem

I am from the land of shoes, clothes, and magazines,
From computers and TV’s,
From homework piled up everywhere,
From millions of blankets and pillows,
From a happy outgoing place that is all my own.

I am from a land of memories,
From where one specific room or area brings back 1000 laughs,
From the perfect smell of grilled turkey or fresh gingerbread,
From maple trees that come alive in the fall,
From cooking and campfires,
From where the scariest thing is the Doberman down the street,

I am from farms where there are more cows than people.
From a school with amazing spirit,
From football games cheering on the Bulls thinking we would rather be dead than black and red,
From a place where, for that brief second, you sometimes wonder what is the difference between this and heaven?
And then an event, such as the cycle of life, acts upon a teenager and in one brief moment he is gone,
From a place where time has been slowed down and childhood will live on forever,
From a place that I could never forget and from people that lived and came before me and who will come after me.

I am Ja, ich bin Deutsche.
From the prim and proper English,
From the hot headed Scottish,
From the survivors of the potato famine,
From the land of the stubborn Slavs.

I am from the land of surviving the poor choices of our leaders,
From losing innocent lives that will never be returned to us,
From a free place that I am happy to be a part of,
From technology shaping our lives and making some things obsolete,
From the land where people think ribbons can fix everything,
From a land where things have been changed forever,

I am from the country that will soon be run by technology,
From a place where harmony is too great a hope, when we still can’t tell the truth
From a place that I hope will be ready for anything,
From a place that “When the love for power is overcome by the power of love, there will be peace.”
From a place that is an amazing country, that just needs to be straightened out and have a new beginning.
